The Block 2022: Dylan and Jenny

Meet the Contestants: Dylan and Jenny

DYLAN AND JENNY

Builder and apprentice chippy from the Gold Coast, QLD

Dylan and Jenny are engaged and hope to tie the knot in March next year. They met years ago while working in the Canadian ski resort town of Whistler.

They might always be sweet and smiling, but they are on The Block to take it seriously and are not afraid of hard work.

Dylan and Jenny The block 2022Meet Dylan and Jenny, the dynamic duo from the GC, a builder and apprentice chippy, we cannot wait to watch this lady tradie.

EXPERIENCE

This couple were building their own home in Palm Beach on the Gold Coast when they got the call to be on The Block.

Dylan is a builder and Jenny works with him as an apprentice tradie – a first for The Block. They recently started their own building company called Smooth Sailing Designs.

They know what to do when it comes to renovating a house.

“We are building our own dream home in Palm Beach, getting married and now doing this. It’s an amazing time,” Jenny said.

Dylan, 28, builder

For Dylan, building houses has always been in the family.

“My dad is a builder and I have grown up watching him,” he explains. “Now that I’m a builder it felt natural to apply for The Block as it’s something I have always wanted to challenge myself with.”

Dylan is a hard worker who plans to throw everything he can into The Block, as he realises it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Jenny, 25, apprentice chippy

A proud female tradie, Jenny wants to show Australia and young girls that the building industry can be a great career for a woman.

“When I tell people I am doing my apprenticeship they always say you don’t build, you don’t do anything. But I do – I do everything,” she says.

Jenny has worked in childcare, as a dental assistant, and she was a ski instructor in Whistler, before deciding to make it in the construction game.

She is looking forward to getting on the tools – the first time The Block has ever featured a female tradie.

TOGETHER

Dylan and Jenny believe they will be a real threat on The Block, as they work and spend most of their time together.

They researched and planned what they wanted to do before heading to the Macedon Ranges.

Their friends and family have always said they would be perfect for The Block – and they agree.

House Decider Challenge

 Second Place

VJ panelling with a sage green wall above, perfect execution and the addition of a wardrobe all ticked boxes for the judges as they took in Dylan and Jenny’s room… but the stying, they said, lets them down.

“Elevate the drama and the grandeur!” Darren suggested, urging the pair to develop a look and feel that will really life their home. Neale agreed, pointing to the hanging plant that “lacked soul”. It’s a great room, Shaynna said, but it could be better if the pair took in some similar homes in the area to see how “country” can be done without sacrificing their modern feel.

HOUSE 4

Week 1

25.5/30 - Equal Second Place

Down a small hallway, through an arch and into what Neal described as: “fresh, welcoming - and kind of timeless” as he walked in to Dylan and Jenny’s light and airy bathroom, made even better, Shaynna added, by the breath-taking view outside. For Darren it was the sense of balance, with curved mirrors playing off the archway entrance, a blind at the exact height of the picture rail and skylights breaking up the ceiling. Not everything worked, they agreed, with a sloped floor just one problem, but overall, Darren continued, to make a bathroom ideal for a marketing brochure.

Week 2

Guest Bedroom

26.5 / 30 - Second Place

Damn that gnome!! Sharon and Ankur stole the win from under the tradie couple's nose.

With their trademark perfect execution, the tradies from the Gold Coast delivered a room all judges agreed ticked al the boxes.

“I’m in heaven!” said Darren as he took in the over-sized check pattern in the blanket, the complementing wallpaper, the wainscoting, skylight, cornicing and another archway. “It’s all so luxe!”. He did point out an issue with the sheers not working with the shutters, and Shaynna said the bedsides and Sconces could have been bigger, but for Neale it was a room very hard to fault and one that left him asking: “More please!”

Week 3 Master Ensuite

23.5 / 30 Points - Tied Fourth Place

With a luxury benchseat shower area, double shower heads and plenty of space, this has “day spa potential”, the judges agreed.

Mixing the same tile Ryan and Rachel had chosen, but not going full height, then blending in a mushroom tile in the vanity area, with oak and brass touches and the couple’s signature arches, the combination is an understated elegance, Neale said.

Not everything won their approval however, with the bath too close to the wall and toilet – hard to understand with so much space, Shaynna said – and both caulking and grout incomplete.

But with styling on point, right down to a live Chrysanthemum, it was, Neale summed up: “A contemporary room with just enough heritage touches.”

Week 4 Master Bedroom and Walk In's

25.5 / 30 - Fourth place

Walking straight into the spacious wardrobe – complete with the first dressing table of the day – the judges found themselves admiring the wallpaper, the view, the storage galore and the way this space was unusual, but still made sense.

After wondering again why there’s no door on the bathroom, they headed into the bedroom, and were impressed by the window seat… but not the curtains and wondered if the artwork could have been scaled down.

It’s a room with style they agreed, but does it live up to their earlier successes? Perhaps not.

Week 5 Guest Bedroom and Bathroom

24.5 / 30 - Fourth place

Laminex panelling complementing the sconces, harmonious curtaining and a gorgeous colour palette combine to bring out the best in a room much smaller, but at least better finished than some others, the judges said of Jenny and Dylan’s bedroom.

That sentiment carried over to the bathroom, where Darren pointed out the tiles, vanity, basin, mirror and especially the bath all combine for a perfect balance of luxury and country style.

The cabinets, however, were a touch too high, Shaynna said and Neale pointed out a suction-cupped sponge that brought down the luxe feel. Those faults aside however, it was a room, they agree, that just works.

Week 6 - Kitchen

Joint Second place - 28.5 / 30

With brass mesh inserts in Sage green cabinetry, ribbed glass panelling behind the rangehood Shaynna was instantly captivated by the colours of house 4’s kitchen, while Neale gushed over the mix of contemporary and country that tugged at the heartstrings.

By matching the stove, fridge and rangehood, the whole area ties together, Shaynna said, with Darren pointing the lighting that for once this week, he utterly loved.

From modern touches like an Insinkerator garbage disposal unit to a traditional butler’s pantry with more benchspace than they could want, the judges found the space a perfect addition to Jenny and Dylan’s home.

Week 7 - Living and Dining Rooms

22/30 - Fourth place

A “classic” and “traditional” space greeted the judges in house four, with the MyPlace automation panel a rare modern touch in a room that borrowed heavily from the past.

A bit too much perhaps, they decided as they continued on and noticed styling touches and furnishing choices that would have looked more at home in a country cottage than a luxe home.

Scale up the furniture, they advised, revisit the lighting plan (that reminded them of a 7/11 and featured a chandelier that could have been much bigger) and the room would get there, they said.

Week 8 Hallway, Laundry and Mudroom Reveal

27/30 - First place

The flooring? Heaven. The rug? Gorgeous. The sheer scale of the hallway stretching from the old build straight down into the new? Staggering!

With a seating nook midway, views of Mount Macedon to the side and artworks to break up the walk, the judges found the hall not only functional but inviting.

Into the laundry and mudroom and not even missing architraves or skirts could dampen their enthusiasm for a space filled with storage, luxe appliances and well-thought-out functionality.

Not quite a perfect ten, the judges agreed, but given the challenges of the week, one of the best hellweek results they’d seen!

Week 9 - Guest Bedroom Kids

29 / 30 - First place

“Wow!” said Shaynna as she walked into Jenny and Dylan’s bedroom, taking in the whimsical festoon lighting over the bunk, a hanging chair, a zoo of stuffed toys and artwork to complement it all.

It’s authentic and genuine, Neale said… and hard to fault.

Aside from a scratch in the ceiling Darren spotted, this was a near-perfect finish, the judges added, with a natural palette and pops of colour all adding up to a space Darren just loved.

Functionally, the Kinsman wardrobe choice works well, with the styling touches leaving the judges wishing they could all pick a piece to take home. A hard room to beat, they said.

Week 10 Bedroom and Redo room

27.5 / 30 - Third place

Fluted wall panels and waffle bed throws combine for “texture on texture” Shaynna said, working well with the cabinetry (especially the handles), artwork, bedside table and lamp to showcase the palette and feel of the new room.

Simple, Neale, said, but consistent with the rest of the house.

Into the re-do living and dining room and that sense of cohesion continued with a completely changed space that now sits well with the home.

New sconces, the chandelier replaced by a fan, a fresh coat of paint over the Venetian plaster and styling changes have given the space a contemporary feel without sacrificing the country nods.

“Next level,” Neale summed up, and now right for their home.

Week 11: Working from home reveal

22.5 / 30 - Fourth place

In a year when home cinemas had been downplayed, Dylan and Jenny’s 100-inch monster television took the judges breath away and helped give the new space a double use – as office or screening room.

The lack of fireplace lost points from Alisa and Lysandra, as did the “dead space” in the room’s centre, something that could be remedied with the addition of a dining table perhaps, or a larger version of the bar area.

Once again the Caesarstone desktop, felt cold to the judges, but a few styling touches – and a repair to a cracked ceiling – could have pushed them higher up the scores.

Week 12 Landscape Reveal

Equal Third place - 26.5 / 30

From the white on white front face to the dark grey James Hardie cladding to the largest deck ever seen on The Block on the home’s downhill side to take in views of the Macedon Ranges, this is a home, the judges agree, that is perfectly placed to make the most of the outdoors.

And what an outdoor area there is to take in.

Terraced gardens with bricks steps, a woodfired spa, ice plunge bath, pizza oven, beehives, a private tiny house halfway to the road and more, this is a home, Darren said, that will look good on the brochure.

It was the final piece to the puzzle for The Block 2022, the biggest Block yet,

Jenny and Dylan's house 4 has SOLD!

We are SO incredibly thrilled that Jenny and Dylan, the 2022 engaged lovebirds from the Gold Coast Queensland has sold.

Jenny and Dylan, both tradies from Queensland, were some of the hardest working contestant's The Block had ever seen, a down to earth couple who gave it their all. Which is why when the devastating news came to light after the auction that their house had not sold the nation felt for this young couple, in what was a stark reminder that The Block is in fact a reality TV show.

"We can confirm House 4 has sold on The Block: Tree Change in Gisborne, in what is a positive outcome for everyone," a Nine spokesperson said.

"Dylan and Jenny's house is now a much loved property for a family who were impressed with the high standard of the build, and incredible views of the Macedon Ranges so close to Melbourne."

Jenny and Dylan created a perfect family home, complete with a long hallway sprouting off bedrooms, a stunning kitchen and large living area which overlooked a huge deck, complete with yard featuring a pool and spa, ice bath, bee hives, veggie patches and so much more, but last but not least an incredible view of the Macedon Ranges.

The timing could not be more perfect for the couple, with their wedding coming up and Jenny having just celebrated her Hen's party in their newly built, Palm House, on the Gold Coast. The hens party saw Rachel and Sarah-Jane reunited with their girl Jenny to celebrate in style.
