You can never have too many cushions. So says Jesse. While Kenny reckons he’s had to get an overdraft on their mortgage just to fund her homewares habit. Oh, and her shoe obsession. “I have been banned from buying cushions,” she says, “but sometimes you need different cushions for different days of the week.” “Kenny is very practical, I call him Mr. No. I have to sneak things into the house and see if he’ll notice.” “I’m really good with budgets because I don’t like to spend any money,” Kenny says. Although in Kenny’s defence, they have paid for a wedding and built a house in the past 18 months. But as Jesse keeps reminding him: “Happy wife, happy life.” The pair split their time between their Townsville home and a copper mine just outside Cloncurry, about 150km from Mt Isa. They work one week on and one week off, so their home half the time is a not-so-glamorous mining donga. He works in the underground mine and she works as a truck driver in the open cut mine. It’s hard, physical work, but they both adore it.
