The Block Shop Home Decor Trends for 2023

Minimalism is out, maximalism is in!

Here are the top home decor trends we’re obsessed with for 2023

Remember when plain, white rooms were all the rage? Thank goodness THAT’s not a thing anymore. The secret maximalist in us is rejoicing as we welcome knick-knacks, riotous prints, texture and bright pops of colour back into our homes for 2023. Cosy is in – so what are you waiting for? Start nesting!

Brown tones

If you've been perusing design mags or websites recently you would have noticed the colour brown popping up a lot. It’s having a moment this year, appearing in everything from soft furnishings to crockery, throws, pillows, towels – you name it! Worried your home may start to resemble a 1970s discoteque? Use it sparingly in throws and pillows against a minimalist backdrop.

Rachel and Ryan The Block leather lounge Rachel and Ryan used brown tones to perfection in their working from home space this year, pour yourself a drink and shop the room here.

Textured surfaces

While we won’t be in a rush to start sponging paint onto our walls (helloooo 1990s!), now’s a great time to get more adventurous with textures and surfaces in your home. Rendering inside walls and curving off their edges introduces a lovely organic feel to your home – but make sure you employ a professional, as this look is deceptively hard to pull off.

Scott Cam The Block HouseFor me this year I fell in love with Scott Cam's Block House, the curves in the Pool Cabana were stunning and that place could hold one hell of a pool party!

Scott Cam The Block HouseScott Cam's house for me was the ultimate master class in textured surfaces, the hallway timberwork through to brick flooring to bring you from the old house to the new build, it was just perfection on every level.

Natural timber

This has been a big trend these past few years, and continues to make an appearance in home decor for 2023. When paired with textured walls it creates a lovely, earthy feel that lends itself particularly well to that ‘coastal luxe’ look. Used as a feature in dining or coffee tables, or as a material in collected artefacts like masks or statues, natural timber is versatile, tactile and economically sustainable.

Artisanal pieces

Which brings us to our next point – in the past two years there has been a real move away from “fast furniture” to a more deliberate, curated look for our homes. Up until recently, we’ve not had an opportunity to travel the world, and in response to this, many interior decor trends have put focus on collected knick-knacks, artefacts, artwork and curios. Collected objects are now pride of place on shelves and on display – and we are totally there for it.

TH BROWN STOOL THE BLOCKNothing says artisanal furniture like Australian Furniture brand TH Brown. They make beautiful pieces to be cherished forever in their South Australian factory. Remember these stools Mitch and Mark used.

Hotel bathrooms

During Lockdown many of us rediscovered our bathrooms. They became a place – sometimes the ONLY place – to escape family chaos and have a bit of “me” time. According to reports, internet searches for “hotel bathroom inspo” are through the roof, with people seeking to replicate that deluxe experience in their own homes.

Omar and Oz bathroom the blockOmar and Oz were the bathroom kings this season, and this is why! Beautiful luxurious finishes!

Textured rugs

Thick, textured woven rugs are a big home decor trend for 2023, with a plethora available online. Particularly on trend are Moroccan and Aztec prints, paired with a thick, loop-pile.

House trees

Bring the outside in by making a large statement tree a focal point in your room. Those of us who rushed to purchase Fiddle Leaf figs a few years back will probably now be sharing our space with a monster, and in our opinion – the bigger the better! It’s getting easier to find large, deep pots to house our larger plant friends – choose one with a textured surface like terracotta to bring that organic, earthy feel inside.

Mimo Pots The Block ShopMimo Pots were featured in The Block this season, these hand painted beauties are a maximalist's dream!

Velvet everything

Velvet continues to be a big home decor trend, popping up in items both large and small. Worried a velvet sofa may date? You’d be right. But you can still introduce the luxe fabric into your home via cushions or throws instead, or as a shade for your lamp.
