The Block 2021: House decider challenge

Only three teams have arrived so far, but that doesn’t stop Scotty throwing out the first challenge of The Block 2021 – the House Decider Challenge.

The pressure is well and truly on as each team sets out to build a bedroom to wow the judges, and show just what they have in store this year. From Coastal Chic to relaxed Hamptons, mid-century modern and more, it’s game on, with the winner able to choose which of the five houses they want!

It’s game on!  The winner of the house decider challenge will choose which of the five houses they want.

Kirsty & Jesse (first place)

With VJ panelling bringing texture and character, and wainscotting highlighting the Hamptons – Country fusion this team loves, the judges were very impressed by Kirsty and Jesse’s challenge room. Like a country bed and breakfast, Shaynna summed up. “Fresh and vibrant!” Neale added and even Darren – who spotted some problems with the room’s execution, especially the paintwork – admitted it was a well-detailed room with lots of thought about functionality. As the first example of what the NSW team might be capable of, it was enough to leave all judges excited and showed them there was a hidden depth to the young couple.

Josh & Luke

Using a huge north-facing window to give full advantage to the available light, Josh and Luke’s challenge room took the judges breath away, with Neal declaring it’s contemporary Australian style the perfect blueprint to take to the house they will soon be building. For Darren, the timber feature wall behind the bed and Sage green colour choice showed a thoughtful approach to design… if only that had extended to a functional wardrobe! With a hint that more care should be put into fixtures such as the bedsides, table and lamp, Shaynna said she felt this was a good room… but perhaps not the best presented this week!

Tanya & Vito

Open the door and enter a world of colour, from the salmon and plum features to the flecked terrazzo, artworks that pick up the well-styled bed, and more. Throw in the Beacon Lighting fan, bedhead and pendants and the result is, Shaynna says, a room with oodles of personality. But there are problems, Darren points out, with the paintwork needing a little more care and perhaps a rug, suggests Neal, to offset the beautiful, but cold terrazzo floor. Still, they agree, Tanya and Vito's room shows an eclectic style, one that will no doubt flow through to the rest of the house!
