The Block 2021: Tanya and Vito

Tanya and Vito – Parents from Melbourne, VIC and take a look at all their completed Block home.

Tanya and Vito – The Block 2021

Together for two decades and married for 18 years, with children Eva (12) and Josiah (8), Tanya and Vito are as close a couple as you can get. Tanya and Vito have big personalities and are not afraid to either show or hide their emotions – they plan on making a big impact on the program, that is certain.

Tanya and Vito - The Block 2021
The Block is something we have watched for years so it’s just amazing to be on it,” Tanya tells Insider Style.

Experience:

Tanya and Vito, who have always lived in Melbourne’s north-west suburbs have built three houses of their own during their marriage.

The last home – where they live with their two children Eva, 12, and Josiah, 8 – in the Melbourne suburb of Airport West, is their pride and joy.

Their style is loud and bright and colourful and they believe their experience of building three homes will help them immensely on The Block.

“We understand trades,” Vito says.

And both have been fans of The Block for a long time.

“The Block is something we have watched for years so it’s just amazing to be on it,” Tanya says. “We can’t believe this is happening to us.”

Tanya – Makeup artist:

With her signature bright purple hair Tanya is well known in Melbourne and Australia as a makeup artist.

With over 11,000 followers on Instagram she has developed a strong fan following over the years for her work and has many celebrity clients.

She knows what the TV industry is about, but being on The Block is a completely different beast.

“I am so used to doing hair and makeup and making talent feel good,” she says.

“Being on the other side of the camera, it took me a while to get used to that.”

Tanya is personable and always makes an entrance when she walks in the room.

She is a determined and her persistence will hold her in good stead in this pressure cooker environment.

Vito – Window furnisher:

Over the years Vito has had a number of jobs and is a qualified barber.

He is set to be the resident snipper on The Block, something he is hoping will win him a few friends and favours.

He is so close with his wife Tanya and does nothing without her input.

“I need her with me,” he says. “I trust Tanya with all my life. That’s the way it’s going to be on The Block, I am only going to trust Tanya.”

Italian in background, family is incredibly important to Vito. He wants to set an example to his kids on The Block.

“We want to set the best example for our kids, mum and dad doing their best when dealing with the highs and lows. We always make sure that we work together as a team. When we do, we can do anything,” he says.

Together:

Best friends as well as partners, Vito leans on Tanya, and Tanya leans on Vito. And that is going to be the theme for the close Melbourne couple this year on The Block.

Relying on each other for help and advice, they’ll listen to others, but make up their own minds about what’s best for them.

There is always drama and conflict on The Block. Tanya and Vito plan on using their immensely close bond to stick together and get through it all.

Tanya and Vito brought all the colours to their guest bedroom!

Bright, colourful and filled with styling touches unique to Tanya’s quirky style, this guest bedroom sets the tone for the house that is to follow. Tanya’s unique and vibrant palette brings a sense of fun to the room, with wood panelling topped by a terrazzo shelf behind the beautifully styled bed, flowing sheers over the window, streaming sunlight from the Aurora artwork and a hanging plant making this a soft, living space. And perfect for work too, with a corner desk and light-surrounded mirror big enough for a small home office or getting ready for the day.

BLOCK WEEK 2
Master Bedroom
Third Place

Tanya and Vito Block bathroom 2021
Tanya and Vito come in third place with their Moroccan inspired bathroom.

Terrazo flooring? Check. Bold chocolate brown feature wall? Check. Exotic ceramic pendant and peach sinks? Double check! And it all added up to a functional bathroom just dripping with Tanya and Vito’s unique style and a definite Moroccan feel – and the judges were happy to have made the trip. No toilet in the room was controversial, as were the lack of towel rails, but the benefit was a huge shower area and uncluttered walls that all combined to create a feeling of space. On pure ambiance, Neale said, this room delivers.

BLOCK WEEK 3
Master Bedroom
Third Place

Tanya and Vito Block Master Bedroom
Tanya and Vito have stayed true to their colourful palette in their master bedroom.

Light bright and colourful, Tanya and Vito’s master bedroom was the “Goldilocks room” for the judges this week – not too big and not too small, but just right. Bringing the Moroccan feel of the guest ensuite into the space, the pair created a haven away from the house but still connected. Shaynna immediately fell for the bedhead, the side tables, the wallpaper and the artwork – including another Tanya original – with Darren warming to the quirky styling touches. The Kinsman wardrobe too, united them all, with Darren declaring they had the best storage solution he’d seen all day.

BLOCK WEEK 4
Basement - Home Cinema
Third Place

Tanya and Vito home cinema on The Block
I wonder what genre movie Tanya and Vito have selected...maybe a drama?

It’s off to the movies for Tanya and Vito from the recessed cavity slider door to the banked seating – with luxurious electric recliners complete with side tables, perfect for taking in the huge screen, ceiling to floor boucle curtains to block out distractions and even a snoozing couch at the back! Not as versatile a space as some others, Shaynna pointed out, but hard to fault as a cinema, which is exactly what they’d set out to achieve. Complete with blue led strip lighting, the result is a space Darren pointed out is rare in this market and once again perfect in a post-COVID world.

Block Week 5
Master Ensuite
Fourth Place

Tanya and Vito Block master ensuite with brown tiles and a black toilet
Tanya and Vito’s bathroom continued to show us their retro love of colour.

From brown tiles to a black toilet, sensible planning and functionality throughout, Tanya and Vito’s bathroom grabbed Darren from the second he entered. And on the styling front, Shaynna agreed, with the bold colour choices stamping a unique style on the room that shows just how different the team’s aesthetic will be. But will that be too polarising come auction day, Neale wondered. Is it deco? 70s? Or something blending multiple influences? Will there be enough people who share the couple’s love of colour, retro-chic and multiple hero pieces? Time will tell!

Tanya and Vito kids room on The Block
Tanya and Vito’s love for colour continued to shine this week in their kid's bedroom.

A built-in bunk, generous wardrobe and ample storage space, a desk and funk, funky styling make this an ideal kids bedroom, perfect to show Tanya and Vito’s house could easily become their home. Neale’s big concern was how easily the room could be converted for an older child or another purpose – the built-in fixtures might make things tricky – but all agreed it’s a great value add for the home. So too was the re-do room, now without it’s polarising brown tiles. Thank God! said all three judges, it’s still a room with personality, but one that won’t divide the market.

BLOCK WEEK 7
Kitchen Reveals
Score: 25 ½ /30
Spent: $27,083
Fourth Place

Block kitchen 2021 by Tanya and Vito
Tanya and Vito present a kitchen packed with personality.

Bold, bright and fun, this kitchen is packed with personality and shows just what Tanya and Vito have been hinting at through the rest of the house. “This is a kitchen that says love me or hate me, but don’t ignore me!” says Neale, and Shaynna is sure someone will love it. With the terrazzo the couple have been hinting at throughout the house as the hero on a huge custom benchtop, pink cabinetry, ample storage more in the hidden butler’s pantry, a curved window and a feature pendant that’s a work of art in itself, there’s just so much here to catch the eye. Some minor layout issues were a worry, Darren points out, but overall, it’s a great value add to the home!

Living & Dining Reveal

Score: 29 ½ /30

Spent: $49,618

Joint First Place

Tanya and Vito Block Living and dining room reveal
Tanya and Vito got their win with the 1950's inspired living space.

Perfectly matched to the overall 1950s feel of this home was Tanya and Vito’s sunken lounge – and the judges fell in love – and into the couches – immediately. “Fun, playful, cool and retro!” gushed Darren, jumping in to see how the living area fit perfectly between the original front feature window with full length sheers and newly installed double-sided fireplace. Next over was the generous dining area, just perfect for a family dinner. And over it all, the “work of art” of five round Velux skylights… “You guys have nailed it!” Shaynna said.

Block Week 9
Hallway, Laundry & Powder Room
Score: 25/30
Spent: $34,138
Fourth Place

Tanya and Vito Block hallway 2021
Tanya and Vito continued with their colourful and quirky style during the infamous Block hellweek.

With a huge aluminium and glass door to separate the living room from the hallway while still bringing light to a small, but functional office and an art-lined corridor with its own powder room this was the ideal way, the judges said, to separate the home’s spaces. A switchboard cover on display brought them down, as did a polarising mirror that might be a bit too much for some, but into the laundry and Shaynna at least was smiling again at the ample storage.

Block week 10 - Backyard & Pool Reveal
Score: 22 ½ /30
Spent: $45,005
Last Place

Tanya and Vito Block backyard 2021Tanya and Vito created a functional backyard and pool area but the judges felt it lacked personality.

A sweeping Merbau deck leading to the enclosed pool with an adjacent barbecue and dining area, Tanya and Vito’s backyard showed a usable, functional space open to interpretation but underwhelmed the judges. “Where’s the personality?” asked Shaynna as she looked over a large expanse that seemed “undercooked”. Using the extra two-metres gained by moving the original house forward, the pair had created a large grassed area with a clothesline to service the rear-opening but left few obvious areas for a family to play.

Block Week 11 - Garages and wine cellar

Score: 19 ½ /30
Fourth Place

Tanya and Vito garage, wine cellar and study revealTanya and Vito are pictured in their garage which has access straight to the backyard.

From the teal green horizontal garage door with portholes matching the heritage façade to the polished concrete floor and huge storage area, this is a room where functionality is clearly king. Coming at the cost of a fourth bedroom, the judges did wonder if the storage might be a mistake, but with its access to the backyard and the driveway, agreed it will definitely be a plus to any buyer. Another plus is the downstairs games room they found outside the home cinema, complete with a Euro Cave wine fridge, classic arcade amusements and a statue welcoming visitors in. “It’s fun, it’s quirky and it’s in keeping with the house,” Darren said!

The final week! Front gardens and front facades

Score: 24/30

Last Place

Tanya and Vito Front Garden and Facade reveal The Block 2021
Tanya and Vito created a “dream come true” for the right buyer.

With a letterbox mirroring the home’s distinctive roof and crazy paving to the front door, a hanging chair to take in the street and a colour scheme paying homage to the original home, this was a yard that impressed. But was it enough? No barrier to the street worried Shaynna, minimal lighting caught Darren’s attention and small plants near the door left Neale wanting more, but all agreed the unique style from the home had been carried through to the curb to create a “dream come true” for the right buyer.

Block Auctions

Tanya and Vito Block auction Day

House 3 Tanya & Vito
Reserve, $3,400,000 Sold for $3,800,000.01 ($400,000.01 profit)

Tanya and Vito’s mid-century home sold for $3,800,000.01 with the controversial couple walking away with $400,000.01. Beforehand, Tanya confessed to Australia that she indeed took the photo that led to the biggest cheating scandal in Australian TV history, after Josh and Luke came clean in an explosive final interview.

Tanya and Vito’s home was snapped up by Melbourne philanthropist Danny Wallis, adding to his Block property portfolio, purchasing three houses on auction day, including Mitch and Mark’s, Tanya and Vito’s, and Kirsty and Jesse’s, for a cool $12.2 million.

Danny said he planned to donate Tanya and Vito’s home to My Room Children’s Cancer Charity: “There’s always demand for accommodation for families with kids with cancer. I bought Daniel and Jade’s Block house last year and it’s always in use. Now I’ve bought another one for My Room to help support these kids.

My Room CEO Margaret Zita said: “Danny’s gift to My Room means we can continue to support families during their darkest days. When I got the call, it was so emotional and humbling, as we have seen the impact that the Brighton Block home has given to families. When you have a child with cancer, every moment counts and that is exactly what Danny Wallis’s generous gift to My Room is creating.”
