Room Reveal: Guest Bedroom | Part 1

We take a look inside the contestants first guest bedrooms

MITCH AND MARK

Mitch and Mark Guest Bedroom Week 1 The Block

SCORE: 24/30

Fifteen-time house flippers Mitch and Mark brought their own luxe sense of style to their first room reveal - and it hit the nail right on the head for our judges.
“It’s palatial,” Neale said, upon walking into the first guest room, which featured sky-high ceiling heights and a sumptuous palette of slate grey, greens and blues, which worked against a stunning tiled feature wall beautifully.
The judges thought it exuded a sense of ‘Old Hollywood’ glamour, and Shaynna was particularly pleased with the couple’s use of colour. She also loved all the details added throughout the room, including the blue occasional chair, glass chandelier, marble side table, bedside tables with cute flamingo details, the plants, gorgeous pendant lamp and the beading on the walls.
The couple chose to accessorise with captivating surf-themed photographic prints, which, as Darren explained, “added a sense of fun and quirkiness - it’s all obviously on-trend.”
“Week one and they’re already delivering to THIS level - Mitch and Mark must really know what they are doing,” Neale said,
And we agree - well-done guys!

TESS AND LUKE

Tess and Luke Guest Bedroom Week 1 The Block

SCORE: 17.5/30

This year’s youngest contestants Tess and Luke were caught off-guard with just how much work is required to complete a room of this size. And, after several big set-backs this week, they were unable to properly complete their room.
I’m frustrated because there’s not really enough to get your teeth into,” Neale said upon stepping down the passageway into their sparsely decorated space.
“I can see where they’re going with this, it’s a pretty young-looking vibe,” Darren said, noting the light colour palette and use of white cabinetry in the room, which orientated around a central, ornate fireplace.
The couple opted for a dark-coloured carpet and dressed the room with a green occasional chair, a side table, and quirky ornaments on the fireplace.
They placed dark beading on the walls, presumably to frame two prints above the bed, but at the time of judging, they were yet to hang them.
As well as built-in wardrobes, the couple chose to include a study nook space, “And I can see where they are going with this,” Darren said, noting he liked the use of warm walnut features and the colour-palette reflected in the art.
The other two judges were unsure about the fact the couple had mixed Edwardian, Federation and Deco design features, but all concluded it was next to impossible to judge further due to the state of completion.
Better luck next room, guys!

ANDY & DEB

Andy and Deb Guest Bedroom Week 1 The Block

SCORE: 17.5/30

It was “another unfinished symphony,” as the judges entered Andy and Deb’s room, the couple failing to complete their space on time due to a number of unforeseen circumstances and time restraints.
What they had done, the judges did like, with Shaynna noting Deb had styled the space particularly well and that it was finished to a high standard.
“I like the space in here,” she said, remarking how much she appreciated the couple’s shaker-style bed.
Both Darren and Neale thought that it was interesting that the couple had chosen to take the room in a Scandi-style direction, but weren’t entirely convinced about using that particular decor choice in the Federation-style home.
“This is a good place to start, but please don't stay in this direction,” Shaynna concurred, obviously not entirely convinced the cabinetry worked with the simple art, floor mirror, white bed, white walls and ornate rug
She later said she thought it all felt “a bit predictable.”
With so much still to do to complete the room, it’s hard to see Deb’s style direction, but she was clearly trying to opt for light, bright, beach-side living - here’s hoping she has more time to execute her vision in future.
