Past contestants, and renovation specialists Ronnie and Georgia have a reputation for painting perfection. Ronnie’s a big believer in “Practice makes perfect!!”. The prep dictates the best possible result you can achieve, it needs to be done properly and with the correct tools for the job. Using top quality brushes and rollers will not only save you time, paint and money but allow you to achieve the perfect finish. A final word from Ronnie “get on the paintbrush, everyone can paint, give it a red-hot shot.”

Oldfields DIY pointers to help you consistently achieve a professional finish.

1. Make sure its an Oldfields!

Choosing quality paint tools plays a significant role in the end result. Cutting corners here is like backing a rank outsider in the Melbourne Cup, the chances of a great result are next to nothing. Achieving the ultimate finish means choosing high quality tools specifically designed for the task at hand. Trust us, your walls will tell a story for years to come!

2. Brush quality will make or break you!

An Oldfields brush holds more paint, provides a silky-smooth finish, gives you more control and allows you to deliver the perfect outcome. That means no brush marks, no picking filaments off the wall or reloading your brush every few seconds.

The Pro Series brush range is designed for the paint professional and the perfectionist. If you’re a DIYer, give it a go, enjoy a true painting experience and be pleasantly surprised by how easily you can achieve an outstanding finish.

3. The best way to cut in.....

“Cutting in” can be tricky business. It’s the technique used to paint the tight areas of a room such as the edges of walls, the ceiling line, corners, around window and door frames, skirting boards and architraves.

It’s time-consuming work and can look very untidy if you don’t get it right. Apart from a steady hand, the right brush and some masking tape there’s a particular process to help you achieve the perfect finish.

  • Ceiling lines and cornices first
  • Then the top wall corners down 50% of the wall
  • Next the remaining wall to skirting
  • and finally, the skirting boards

4. Ever considered using a roller bucket?

There are numerous benefits to using a roller bucket and for many professionals the Oldfields bucket is the ideal solution.

  • Great as a paint tray
  • Ideal home for rollers when doing brush work
  • Equally suitable for brushwork
  • Limits paint contamination if a brush is dirty
  • It's less likely to tip over and spill when knocked

5. The ‘must have’ paint tools so you don’t get caught short

There’s nothing worse than starting a job and finding out you’ve forgotten a key tool. You’ll be on the money if you have:

  • Paint bucket or tray
  • Pro Series Brush
  • Pro Series Roller Covers
  • Pro Series Roller Frame

6. Not all rollers are created equal!

A roller fail is there for the world to see. The fabric, the NAP and how the roller sleeve is made are all critical to how the paint will flow and ultimately look on your wall. If you’ve ever struggled with roller marks, an uneven finish or lint on the wall you know what we mean!

The surface, finish and type of paint dictate the fabric and NAP length you need. The Oldfields roller guide is an excellent resource to help you decide which one is best suited to your situation.

Oldfields roller technology is exceptional; the yellow roller is famous amongst professionals while the advanced microfibre fabric is low splatter, lint free and provides an outstanding finish.

7. Colour consistency

Different tins of paint can have a subtly different colour, what’s worse the chances are you won’t notice it until it’s dry on the wall. If you’re using more than one tin of paint mix them in a larger container for consistency of colour and finish.
