Russellina Puruntatameri is a proud Tiwi woman from the Tiwi Islands, which is 80kms north of Darwin. Russellina developed her artistic skills from her family back home, where she grew up at Pirlangimpi Garden point, at the Munupi Arts Centre, by watching and listening to their stories. Her paintings highlight the importance of keeping the Tiwi culture strong for the little children when they grow up, so they can learn the culture, stories, dances, language and art.

Yirringarni is one of the Tiwi traditional vegetation classifications meaning billabong, swamp or waterhole. Waterholes are the principal source of life in the outback and form sacred sites where people meet for physical and spiritual sustenance. They are both social and sacred sites for Aboriginal communities and the rivers and gullies that link them form natural pathways for people to travel between them. Connected waterholes are one of the most common symbols in Aboriginal art.
