Jamukutari Tiwi Season | Russellina Puruntatameri | Canvas or Print by Artist Lane

Russellina Puruntatameri is a proud Tiwi woman from the Tiwi Islands, which is 80kms north of Darwin. Russellina developed her artistic skills from her family back home, where she grew up at Pirlangimpi Garden point, at the Munupi Arts Centre, by watching and listening to their stories. Her paintings highlight the importance of keeping the Tiwi culture strong for the little children when they grow up, so they can learn the culture, stories, dances, language and art.

Jamukatari is the Tiwi wet season.Pakitiringa (rain) falls every day and the swamps, creeks, rivers become full. Wunijaka (wind) comes from the northwest blows and brings rain. Lightning and thunder (Pumarali) are frequent. During this time, the mangroves worm bred both cheeky Wakatapa and sweet Yuwurli, and the saltwater crocodiles (Yirrikapayi) build (Maruti) nests and lay eggs. There are lots of bush tucker available during Jamukatari.
