Talking to Steve and Holly, their sense of humour is instantly apparent. It’s rare for a sentence to go by without it being punctuated by laughter – even when they’ve woken up at half-past-six for our interview because, time zones.
“Reno Rumble was insane,” Holly tells The Block Shop. “It was like nothing we’ve ever experienced before in our lives.” She laughs.
The two hail from Western Australia, and despite having renovated their own home, they always knew renovating others’ entire homes in a week, in a different style, would be a challenge.
“Everything you know gets thrown out the window in a one-week renovation,” Steve says. “You start to understand the crazy process in the second week, but still…”
“We were terrified about the design side of things,” Holly admits. “That’s not our strength.”
Their terror was misplaced. They stayed true to their clients’ briefs, and while this week’s effort may not have been enough to keep them in the competition, they should be proud of what they’ve been able to accomplish under some tough circumstances.
While their brief this week was to keep the natural light out – the homeowners are shift-workers – their selection of lighting was inspired, from their bedroom’s wooden pendant and floor lamp to their wardrobe’s ribbon lights. The skylight in the ensuite was the icing on the cake.
And looking back on their work, the couple has no regrets.
“Meeting everyone, be it the builders and tradies, the other couples, the crew … It was just an awesome experience. It was exactly what we wanted,” Steve reflects.
“It was so crazy but at the end of the whole thing, it was a great experience,” Holly adds. “Getting to deliver the house to the homeowners, it was so special.”
“You could never recreate that. You cannot create what that show is,” her husband says.
