In creating this artwork, I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. I pay my respect to their Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.

The Marrunga Yubaa - Sweet Rain series is designed to ignite imagination and celebrate life. It signifies a raindrop’s journey from the clouds to the earth and its importance to the land and our lives. The ancient traditional Aboriginal symbol of rain is portrayed through my own contemporary artistic lens. I have designed the symbol to have a cup of delicate dots that surround just the bottom of each coloured stroke, in a cascading effect. The colour of each drop signifies a part of my life story and is applied in layers of fine art strokes. The colours hold a visual memory of the beautiful Australian landscape through my eyes.

With my fascination with rain comes my ever-evolving exploration with colour. I am exploring the beautiful colours of the Macedon Ranges. The area in which is rich in flora and fauna as well as home to the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Peoples. These three groups are the traditional owners and custodians of the land, and along with the Wathaurung and Boon Wurrung, make up the federation of the Kulin Nation. (Macedon Ranges Shire Council, 2022)

It was important to celebrate this country in all its beauty. From the centre of the painting an important feature is the large concentric circle, stretching to the edge. This is my personal representation of a traditional Aboriginal campsite symbol, a special meeting place, or place of rest. The campsite is made up of intricately painted dots in a distinct pattern to express the journey and the steps that our people have taken throughout time, on country, our mother land.

The colours explored within this piece reflect the magnificent rolling green hills of the Macedon Ranges, laced with the colours of the Australian grown golden Wattle and the vast variety of Eucalyptus trees and native shrubs that are home to this beautiful land. The delicate cups of raindrops that cascade over the Macedon Ranges are highlighted by the gold dots, emphasising the importance of rain and that to many, is liquid gold.

In the bottom left corner of the artwork, painted in a subtle but darkened outline of intricately painted dots are three mountain symbols, representing my three beautiful children. My children play such a major part in my journey through life, as well as the journey I am on and continue to explore through my art. They are a remarkable gift and the reason I exist.

I continue my life journey giving thanks to the rain, a sweet reminder of all the important things I cannot live without.
