Marimekko is a design house celebrated worldwide for its original prints and colours. When the company was founded in 1951, its unconventional designs transformed the tradition of textile printing and clothing in Finland. Over the years, Marimekko has remained true to its original mission of bringing joy to everyday life. The Silkkikuikka pattern is featured on the small and medium-sized hand woven storage baskets made of jute. Every basket is a unique piece. “I was dancing with brushes,” said Maija Isola. In 1961, she spent many evenings and nights working in Marimekko’s print factory – painting in gentle, sweeping brushstrokes to the sway of music. Meter upon meter of new patterns emerged. On one of those nights, Silkkikuikka (great crested grebe), a pattern of alluring rhythm and simplicity, saw daylight.
