17th century lace makers used their craft as a form of storytelling; hunting images were found on items of clothing of the era as decoration. Transformed from a necessity, hunting became a stylised pastime for the aristocracy during this time. It was a privilege and measurement of nobility, an arena for social interaction and essential training for war.

The original work used carbon, charcoal and collage; its’ bespoke design was hand-cut from cotton ragg, heavy 300gsm textured paper. 24 karat gold leaf embellished the background.

This series was created to personify the powerful female decorated image. Iconic religious paintings of adorned doyens have been displayed in churches over centuries - images of respect, decorated to enhance and celebrate the female image in high esteem.

‘Reverence’ stemmed from many fascinations.

One of them, statues- Victorian mostly - white marble fleshed bodies, the epitome of goddesses, languishing in gardens and on building facades. Another, portraiture of queens - aloof and decadent, over decorated with jewels and an attitude to reflect their status: pin-up, celebrity, idol, heroin. Each piece intermixes haute couture with the narrative and periods of country and western, rock and roll, and other images through time.

Bespoke designs on landscape shaped dresses merge with iconic portraits. These portraits of sculptural soft marble like faces take elements of past and present women to gather all those idiosyncrasies and create a romantic playful female image of women, the true creators, breaking glass ceilings, the quite achievers, powerful and blessed with strength.

Melbourne based artist Joni Dennis award winner both here and overseas. Her bespoke works are found in corporate and domestic spaces in Australia and internationally.
