This painting in a sense is an homage to my favourite artists Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. The famous Death and the Maiden painted by Schiele is legendary and signified in part death of his relationship with his long term lover. History tells us and X-rays that initially in that painting he chose to expose her buttocks in other insult to her. For some reason he gave her some dignity back. The sunflowers are an homage to both Klimt and Schiele, as they both painted them many times. It also represents new beginnings in this painting. I have exposed the buttocks of the man as a gesture and a F you to patriarchy. I wanted to portray the female as the protagonist and the powerful figure in this painting reaching for new beginnings and pushing him and his meagre (and dead) offerings away.
