The Block 2019: Master Bathroom Room Reveal

We take a look at the contestant's level 2 main bathrooms

Tess and Luke Master Bathroom The Block 2019

TESS AND LUKE MASTER BATHROOM REVEAL
SCORE: 28/30

Tess and Luke were the only couple so far yet to win a room. But they pulled out all the stops in their main bathroom, delivering a stunning, modern, spacious bathroom with a speckled mosaic feature tile that had SERIOUS wow factor.
“If they judge on form, function and finish, the form is there, there’s function - I think we are the only bathroom with dual shower heads as well as handhelds and with the bath in there as well - and with finish, we have the mosaic tiles, which is pretty courageous.”
The judges unanimously loved it - and their bathroom won the week!
“Wow, what a beautiful tile choice - stunning,” Neale said, upon stepping foot into the space, which also featured double basins in matte grey, brushed nickel tapware, a gorgeous free-standing bath under the skylight, two oblong shaving mirrors, pops of mahogany in the choice of towels and a stunning strip feature light.
Shaynna loved that the couple stayed true to the architect’s wishes, saying she “thought they had done the floor plan justice...and look at all the drawers!”
Darren was just as big a fan, saying, “maybe Tess and Luke have set themselves aside from the competition this week? Maybe what they’ve given us is the perfect main bathroom?”
He loved the couple’s choice to place the free-standing bath beneath the skylight, and the fact they’d included a lovely architectural roofline to accentuate the space.
“To me, they have demonstrated the luxury that can come out of simplicity,” Neale said. And we agree - we absolutely LOVE this bathroom. Well done, guys!

Elise and Matt Master Bathroom - The Block 2019

EL’ISE AND MATT MASTER BATHROOM REVEAL
SCORE: 26.5/30

El’ise and Matt went the extra mile this week, flipping the architect’s plans to make way for an extra ensuite for their second bedroom. It was a stroke of genius, utilising as it did the natural light source from the void skylight adjacent.
“We wanted to make it something quite spectacular for the buyer,” El’ise said of their room, which features three beautiful tile choices - one in a gorgeous blush pink - double vanity, circular shaving cabinet mirrors, black chandelier, marble imprint tiles, and a double shower positioned exceptionally well below those massive skylights.
It was this last point that Shaynna especially appreciated. “Oh my god - this is beautiful,” she said upon entering.
All three judges loved the glass window and the use of skylights, which Neale thought made it feel as though there was “an outdoor shower” in the space.
Darren loved the choice of colour palette: “I actually love this dusty tile colour against all the black,” he said, referencing the couple’s choice to use matte black tap-wear. He also loved the choice to pair this dark hue with a sweet black side-table next to the bath.
But the one thing they were all unanimous in their praise of, was the generous proportions afforded in what is, effectively, just an ensuite.
“This is a big, big ensuite,” Neale said. “It’s incredibly luxurious and it feels more like a main bathroom.”
Shaynna thought it could be a game-changer for the couple, who might attract a family with younger children, who may wish to use the Level Two bedroom as an ensuite while the children are little, before moving upstairs to the larger Master Suite upstairs. That same space could also work well for an au pair or for grandparents, staying with the family to help care for the kids.
“The flexibility of this small change for them is huge,” she said.
And we agree - well-done guys!

Mitch and Mark Master Bathroom wk 4 The Block

MITCH AND MARK ENSUITE & LAUNDRY REVEAL
SCORE: 24.5/30

This week Mitch and Mark went against the grain, once again changing the architect’s plans to include an ensuite for their third bedroom plus a stylish, practical laundry.
“When you open up those bifold doors and you have this pop of stunning sophisticated navy, it feels like it’s not just a laundry, but also a showpiece as well,” Mitch said of their finished utilities space.
The judges were fans, especially Darren who thought their decision to include this on the second floor was a stroke of genius.
“This is a very neat, well-contained and good looking laundry,” he said, referring to the custom-made cabinetry, gold tapware and that feature tile as a splashback. He was impressed with the layout of the space, and the fact the boys’ had thought about functionality.
“You basically go from ‘dirty’ to ‘clean’,” he said, referring to the flow of the space. “I think the fact this is on the floor that has all the bedrooms, it makes sense - they’ve planned it out beautifully.”
Shaynna also appreciated what they’d done, but couldn’t shake the feeling they had minimised their space by choosing to enclose the laundry behind those bifold doors - the boys disagreed.
Next door, in the ensuite, the judges were once again impressed with the finishes and were particular fans of the oversized shower head, the wooden custom-made vanity, use of that stunning Beaumont chevron white tile, and the heated towel rail
“These boys are really running their own race now,” Neale enthused. “This is delivered with their characteristic attention to detail.”
We love it too. Well done, guys!

Jesse and Mel Master Bathroom wk 4 The Block

JESSE AND MEL MASTER BATHROOM REVEAL
SCORE: 24/30

Jesse and Mel went to extra lengths this week to present their master bathroom and matching powder room, which they both think will appeal to the high-end buyer they’re desperate to lure.
“We pulled out all the stops this week - there are so many fantastic design elements,” said Jesse, referencing the use of travertine-look tiles, a sleek black vanity, those hanging drop pendant lights and the absolutely enormous double shower - complete with custom-made shower block for sitting!
Shaynna said there was a lot to love about the room, pointing to the couple’s stunning vanity, which she said was “a piece of art.”
Neale agreed: “Like you, I absolutely love this cabinetry,” he said. “I love that black frame around it. It’s got that reference to deco, but at the same time it feels very modern.”
They all liked the fact it was a “lighter, brighter” version of what they were attempting to do in the first bathroom, and Darren was a particular fan of the way everything flowed well together. “I love the tile, I love the bath, I think the lighting choice and configuration is fantastic” - and he also liked that the shower heads were positioned close together, something that would appeal to both couples and families with young children.
Shaynna loved the towel choice and the fact they’d chose to incorporate a ladder-style heated towel rail. And while Neale admitted he wasn’t a fan of the separate powder room, Jesse still stood by his decision to move the toilet, pointing out, “In real estate terms it’s a design fault to have a toilet in the bathroom.”
We agree - it’s a great decision. Well done, guys!

Andy and Deb Master Bathroom wk 4 The Block 2019

ANDY AND DEB MASTER BATHROOM REVEAL
SCORE: 22.5/30

Andy and Deb went all-out to present a gorgeous, relaxed and ‘coastal luxe’-style main bathroom, while at the same time referencing their gorgeous ensuite from week one.
And they knocked it out of the park.
“It’s beautiful as soon as you walk in,” said Shaynna, pointing out that their latest main bathroom matched their stunning effort from week one perfectly.
“Walking in here, it’s inviting,” said Darren, who particularly liked the way the couple chose to tie their white, textured subway tile with the natural woods of the custom-made vanity, something Deb described as “made by love and by hand by a family member” - they all decided unanimously this was the hero of the room.
The couple’s choice of wooden accents went perfectly with the gold fixtures and fittings, including that sweet copper pendant light, the natural wooden stool next to the stunning free-standing bath, the use of woven baskets as storage and the choice of persian rugs and textured, patterned towels as accents.
The pop of colour, courtesy of the potted plants, also added a point of difference.
“All of this works perfectly as a beautiful vignette,” Darren pointed out.
All three judges loved the use of smart technology in the space, admiring the way the couple had used Alexa to create a mood in the bathroom and operate the shower and bath. They were not quite so convinced by their decision to relocate their toilet to a separate powder room, but all up they thought the space was stylish and well-considered - and we agree! A lovely space, guys - well done!
