Jimmy and Tam winning Ensuite

The third win in a row for Jimmy and Tam from Brisbane and there is no doubt about it, they are on an incredible winning streak on The Block.

The judges Darren, Shyanna and Neale all thought they delivered a stunning Guest Ensuite bathroom, with fitted the 1950s brief perfectly.

“It reminds me of a public pool change room, with that sort of retro yesteryear, childhood charm,” Darren said.

“But it’s not so youthful that it’s not going to alienate the market.”

Shaynna couldn’t wipe the smile off her face as she pointed out Tam’s styling choices.

She loved the silk dressing gown, the Terrazzo table that cost $450 available here, and the arrangement of soaps and sprays.

Tam also had some al.live body in the bathroom, which is a new product by The Block alumni Alisa and Lysandra.

For Neale, the room took him back to the 1950s, in a good way.

“I can’t remember walking into a bathroom that hasn’t put such a smile on my face, and God knows that is not easy to do, but this bathroom has done it,” he said.

Shaynna loved the teal sink, which was just another perfect 1950s addition by Jimmy and Tam.

The couple is taking the 1950s brief seriously, and it is paying off.

“We did a lot of research this week,” Tam said.

“That was our main thing to make sure we nailed the brief of the 1950s.”

They certainly did that, and more.

The tile choices were on-trend and on era.

With their trifecta of wins, they have now cemented themselves as serious contenders for The Block this year.

But will that also put a target on their back with the other contestants?

Jimmy and Tam went back to The Block in Brighton very happy again, with $10,000 from Ford in their back pockets.

Luxury.

That’s a word you want to hear on The Block and thankfully for Western Sydney’s Sarah and George, they heard it a lot this week during judging of their Guest Ensuite bathroom.

“This luxury in here in front of the house is off the charts,” Shaynna said.

“Luxury in space, luxury in feel.”

There was a lot to like in Sarah and George’s bathroom this week for Darren, Shaynna and Neale.

The Blush Pink tiles were a perfect nod to the 1940s era, the vanity from Reece was stunning, and the colour palette was perfect.

Shaynna also loved the towels and the fluffy slippers.

“They make me very happy,” she said.

She also loved the stool and champagne flute, saying it made the bathroom feel very Hollywood.

Sarah and George spent a lot of time working on the layout the past week and made a decision to install a wall in the bathroom which separates the shower and toilet.

It was a planning decision that paid off, with Darren praising the couple for their efforts.

Neil believes they had done just enough to make the 1940s era.

“Sarah and George have nailed the period references,” he said.

“They have kept it simple and they are just allowing the sheer scale of the bathroom to speak for itself.”

Unlike their neighbours and friends Harry and Tash, the couple also installed underfloor heating, which is essential for a bathroom in Brighton, in Melbourne.

The only negative really was that the height of the black showerhead was too high; Shaynna would have had to wear her heels to reach it.

So after taking some of the negative feedback to heart the first couple of weeks on The Block, Sarah and George were super relieved with the comments this week.

“We’ve heard all the negative feedback, and to finally hear something positive after putting yourself through hell, it’s a different feeling,” George said.

“Wow.”

As Shaynna said this week, if they can deliver something so spectacular for a Guest Ensuite bathroom, just imagine what Sarah and George can do with the Master Bathroom?

We shall wait and see.

Luke and Jasmin Guest Ensuite

Third place

Luke and Jasmin Ensuite

Judge Darren Palmer visited Luke and Jasmin on The Block this week to give them some guidance of just what they need to do to satisfy the 1910s design brief.

Ever since picking House No.4 on The Block, the couple has struggled with exactly what the 1910s is when it comes to the build, having wanted to come to Brighton to build a contemporary home.

The good news for Luke and Jasmin, they did much better this week in the eyes of the judges..

Their Guest Ensuite bathroom was a perfect mix modern and old.

Luke and Jasmin Ensuite

“This really gets the 1910s brief meshed with a very contemporary feel,” Darren said.

Shaynna loved the choice of tiles from Beaumont Tiles along with the white VJ panelling.

It worked perfectly.

Jasmin has got the nickname “Options” on The Block, after changing her mind a number of times with her Guest Ensuite bathroom cabinet.

Eventually, after advice from Darren during the week, she settles on a cabinet and it worked.

Neale loved the wall sconces from Beacon Lighting, the basin and the tapware.

He also felt the way they used the VELUX skylights worked perfectly.
Luke and Jasmin went with a beautiful fluted, reeded glass shower screen which was perfectly on-trend and suited the era.

However, Darren thought they had it around the wrong way, which can easily be fixed.

He also thought they need a towel rail to hang the stunning towels from Aura Home.

So overall after a tough week, it was all worth it for Luke and Jasmin.

“We had a horror week so to actually make it and finish it, we are really happy with that,” Luke said

Fourth place

Daniel and Jade Guest Ensuite

It was a really tough week for our South Australian farmers Daniel and Jade, after the death of Daniel’s grandfather.

Daniel and Jade travelled back to South Australia to be at the funeral, before returning in time to deliver the Guest Ensuite bathroom in their 1930s house.

“For me, it was such a rollercoaster of a week,” Daniel told The Block Shop.

“It was up at the start, then finding out you had a death in the family by the middle of the week and flying home at the end of the week for the funeral, to see the family and then flying back to The Block.”

The pair managed to deliver what they thought was a stunning, contemporary bathroom.

The judges all agreed it was a beautiful 2020 bathroom but they were all disappointed they didn’t pay enough attention to the brief – to build something inspired by the 1930 era.

“It’s a cop-out, it’s a complete cop-out,” Neale said.

“They have not acknowledged the period of the house.

“They have just given us a generic, contemporary bathroom.”

Some of Jade’s choices, however, the judges did like, including the art deco styled mirror cabinet.

They thought they could have gone with a more up to date laminate on the bathroom vanity, which was purchased from Reece.

“The more I’m looking at this, that laminate and this tile is ten years old,” Shaynna said.

“That has dated already.”

Neale wished they took some inspiration from the original bathroom in their 1930s house that included burgundy, subway tiles.

Darren, however, did praise Daniel and Jade for their choice of basin and their execution.

“There is a lot to love in here, functionally it works beautifully.”

So while a little bruised by the comments after a tough week, Daniel and Jade were still very proud and happy with what they delivered.

“We designed our bathroom with what we thought the buyers would want going forward, and I’m stoked with what we’ve got,” he said.

Harry and Tash Guest Ensuite
Score 21.5 / 30
Spent: $18,600
Fifth place

Harry and Tash Guest Ensuite

Melbourne’s Harry and Tash had the smallest Guest Ensuite bathroom on The Block this week, but that doesn’t mean they had it easy.

For a while there the father and daughter didn’t know if they were going to have a tiler or not, after struggling to lock one in.

While the judges praised the execution of the bathroom, it was ultimately their tile choice that really let them down.

Tash chose some amazing tiles, but it was the combination of all the colours and patterns that didn’t gel well according to the judges.

In particular, they weren’t a fan of the floor tiles.

“These are not 1920s,” Shayanna said.

“If you are going to do the 1920s and it’s all about that 1920s, don’t bring another era into that.”

Tash did explain that she only had a short time to choose the tiles and she had a hint earlier in the week the floor tiles weren’t everyone’s cup of tea.

“Bloody floor tiles, I should have gone with what Keith said about them, that they are disgusting,” she said.

Shaynna would have liked simple terrazzo tile in the bathroom, which would have been a perfect nod to the era.

Harry and Tash Guest Ensuite

There were however some positives.

Neale loved the basin especially the curved feature.

However he had a warning to Harry and Tash and the rest of the contestants, they must try and stick to the brief of the eras of their house.

“They are going down that generic heritage path which a lot of people will like, but the brief is to be specific,” he said.
“So if they continue to present rooms that are generic in their approach to the heritage details, we will mark them down.”

So it wasn’t a good week for Harry and Tash, and they also did have one issue with the judges.

Harry and Tash Guest Ensuite

“The judging didn’t seem consistent,” Tash told The Block Shop.

“One thing we were judged negatively on was the fact that our shower screen, which was a 2.4-metre shower screen and was already high, didn’t go to the top of the tiles.

“Jimmy and Tams house, they won, and the judges basically said it was a perfect bathroom but their shower screen didn’t go all the way to the to of the tiles it was actually much smaller than ours.

Harry and Tash Guest Ensuite

“So I don’t think Dad wasn’t happy that it wasn’t consistent feedback.”

So the up and down journey on The Block for Harry and Tash continues. Hopefully next week they will pull it all together.
