They might not have had the easiest few years, but this mum and dad from Victoria don’t know the meaning of quit, which makes them ready for anything The Block has to throw their way.
They began their home renovation a decade ago and it’s still not finished! Yet despite a lack of funds, this is a couple with big plans, and they see The Block as the perfect opportunity to start afresh and build their dream from the ground up.
JASON 46 PLUMBER
This easygoing plumber might look like he doesn’t have a care in the world but don’t be fooled. He’s been through a lot in his time with Sarah, including a misdiagnosis of cancer. But even when doctors told him he had just six months to live he kept on smiling, and it’s this relentless positivity that will stand him in good stead on The Block. A sensitive soul with plenty to say, this father-of-three has the ability to stay grounded when things get tough. But watch out – he doesn’t take criticism well.
“He’s a bit of a sook when it comes to that,” says wife Sarah.
SARAH 45 NURSE
There is no doubt this registered nurse runs a tight ship. But with that comes a soft nurturing side that will melt the toughest of opponents. The straight man to Jason’s joker, Sarah has a work ethic that is unwavering and a keen eye for design, but will unravel when she has to make a decision. She will be the first to tell you to get back to the job at hand, and the first to pat you on the back when you’re done.
“I like to be in control and I’m not afraid of hard work,” she insists.
Her steely determination masks a softer side. When she’s not at home with her husband and three kids Sarah works as a palliative care nurse. “It really puts my life in perspective,” she says.
Hardworking, honest and relatable after 25 years together, there is not much that Sarah and Jason haven’t weathered.
Six years ago they suffered crippling financial difficulties, which saw Jason’s plumbing business eventually go under. At the same time Sarah lost her father and things looked very bleak.
But they soldiered on, pulled themselves out of the depths, and refocused their lives. Jason returned to work as a plumber and Sarah moved from working as a nurse in neurosurgery to palliative care.
It has given this couple a new perspective on their lives. “You think you are doing it bad and then you hear about someone 25 dying of cancer, and they have only got a few weeks to live. And you go, ‘Oh my God, we are so lucky’,” says Jason.
“You do appreciate what you have, even if it might not be what you want,” adds Sarah.
They have been renovating their home for 10 years, a situation not helped by the collapse of Jason’s business, and now they see The Block as their potential ticket to a better life.
“We were halfway through renovations and realised we would never get what we wanted for the money we had,” Jason says. “So we thought we can go back to the bank, and not be able to afford to live. Or we could try some other way of getting the money. And as a spur of the moment thing, Sarah said why don’t we try to go on The Block?”
And they’re still pinching themselves that their dream came true.
With three kids, Henry, 12, Oscar, 10, Greta, 7, and a Great Dane fur-baby called Basil, they’re also just a little bit excited about spending some time again together for the first time in years. But this loving couple know they’ll also miss their kids terribly. However, they’re just around the corner, and the whole family are behind them 100 per cent. “They’re all so excited for us,” says Sarah.
This couple won’t quit until they take home a win.
“We will be perfect for this: we are unstoppable, amusing and have impeccable taste,” Sarah declares.
