After struggling to find affordable outdoor furnishings that can stand the test of time, mum-of-three Sharni Adams launched Outdoor Interiors, specialising in cushions made from Sunbrella solution dyed fabrics.

“I knew there would be a market for luxury outdoor cushions that could actually stay outdoors,” she tells The Block Shop. “The fabrics feel luxe, just like you would expect from an indoor cushion.” We asked her to share her tips for creating a tops outdoor space:

Where should you start when designing an outdoor area? 

Before you buy anything, lay newspaper down on the ground in the dimensions of the furniture that you like so that you can see how much space it actually takes up and how the flow will work. It’s also important to integrate the overall look and feel of your home so that the indoor and outdoor areas feel seamless and work with your surrounding landscape. 
 

What are some of the biggest mistakes to avoid? 

We seem to be programmed to buy a large dining table and chairs for outdoors. Instead, think about an outdoor sofa, chairs and coffee table.  You and the family will lounge about, read and relax more often outdoors on a sofa, than sitting upright at an eight-seater table alone.  Think how five-star hotels arrange outdoor areas. Maybe add a smaller extendable table and benches that can be moved around, if you entertain often.

What trends are you seeing in outdoor areas? 

Gorgeous, high-end designer folding chairs (both metal and timber), large, weatherproof floor lamps that are perfect lighting for balmy evenings and outdoor rugs made from polypropylene in beautiful colours and designs.

What are you loving most in your range at the moment? 

Definitely Palm Cove! It was the first fabric design I fell in love with and inspired me to start Outdoor Interiors.  The quality of this material is amazing.  Marrakesh is also another favourite of mine as the pattern and colours are so vibrant. I have big plans for spring and summer with soft ottomans and bean bags being introduced to our range as well as a whole lot of new designs cut up and just waiting to be sewn.

Why is durability so important?

If you are looking for something that you will not need to worry about bringing inside during our long summer days or weather extremes, then look at 100% solution dyed acrylic. Sunbrella provides more durability over polyester fabrics and is water and chlorine resistant as well as bleach cleanable. The dye is saturated to the core with highly UV stable pigments making our Sunbrella cushions resistant to fading and the degrading effects of sunlight. At Outdoor Interiors, we offer a 5-year warranty against fading.
