Hayden and Sara have won The Block 2018 — and are having a baby boy!

Double congratulations! You’ve won $645,000, and you’re expecting a baby!

Sara: We’re pretty happy! We thought it was the perfect time to tell our family and our friends that we’re having a baby boy in April. Do you know what? I think I’m probably more shocked about having a boy than winning, to be honest. Our daughter Harlow is nearly two. I hear boys are a lot of hard work… I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh!’

Hayden: I had fingers crossed for a boy. Now we have one of each. It’s like the gods came through for us yesterday. 

"We got off the rollercoaster in one piece and with a nice reward," Hayden told Insider Style. Congratulations guys!

How are you feeling Sara?

Sara: I’m pretty good this pregnancy, and that’s why Hayden thought it was a boy. The last pregnancy, I wasn’t feeling too well, I was nauseous, but this one I haven’t felt anything. It’s like I just went straight into my second trimester. 

Hayden and Sara even managed to pull off a fabulous Gatwick-inspired "gender reveal" prior to the auction.

How nervous were you feeling sitting on that couch? 

Sara: I was nervous, but you know what? We couldn’t do anything anymore. We had already done all of the stressing. It was pretty much left up to our estate agent.

You had been on such a rollercoaster this series…

Sara: Now that it’s done, it’s just really good to be able to sit back and take a breather. No one thought that we had a hope of winning. At one point we didn’t even have hope in ourselves but when we started to get all of this amazing feedback from the public, we thought we could be in with a chance. 

Hayden: It was such a crazy ride for us. Australia could see that. It was good to go out on that note and great that everyone got a good result too. We got off the rollercoaster in one piece and with a nice reward. It was amazing.

Do you feel vindicated in choosing your apartment and not the penthouse? Obviously, you knew something …

Sara: That’s exactly how we feel. We made the decision based on what the market was doing in Sydney and we knew the market would trickle down into Melbourne and it did. Our apartment was more bang for your buck. It had a much bigger internal space and picking an apartment with a lower reserve— we smashed it.

"Our apartment was more bang for your buck," said Sara. The brass bath was definitely a standout moment.

Imagine if you had walked out during your lowest point?

Sara: It’s a good lesson. You just have to be determined in your decision and really just have a lot of conviction in where you want to go and just don’t let anyone persuade you into thinking anything else. 

Hayden: It was so hard sometimes. We just picked ourselves up and kept going. I hope that everyone could see that we had endurance in the end. We got there.

What was the mood of the other contestants? 

Sara: Everyone was really happy with their results. We all did better than last year’s Block contestants and this year’s market was worse, so it’s good to get that result. 

We’re just glad that everyone sold their apartments because it’s such a bad market and at a 50% clearance rate, to have 100% sell, we’re all winners.

Do you have any plans for the winnings? 

Hayden: We already had our own renovation project in Sydney and we had to put those plans on hold while we did The Block so now we’re going to jump straight into it and not have to go into another huge mortgage debt. 

Sara: And our parents helped us out with our daughter so much while we were away so we might sling them a family holiday. Definitely help them out because they helped us out so much. 

Sara, do you have any plans to move into the field of design? 

Sara: Its funny you should ask me that because years and years ago, I went and saw a psychic and she said, ‘I don’t see you being a flight attendant for the rest of your life, I see you in interior design. No word of a lie … I mean, look, whether or not I go into design is a whole other story, but it was actually quite a coincidence. So, who knows?'.

Sara told Insider Style "We all did better than last year’s Block contestants and this year’s market was worse, so it’s good to get that result."

How do you look back on the whole Block experience now? 

Sara: We’re quite humble, we’re not going to gloat about it or anything like that, but ultimately, we’re rebels with a cause. 

Hayden: To get that result that at auction and then to get the highest price and win The Block, that was just so awesome. It was amazing. We still can’t quite believe it!
