Mitch and Mark win The Block 2021!

From last place at The Oslo to first place in Hampton, Mitch and Mark’s Block dream comes true.

In a Cinderella story that saw them beat the favourites – and their own hopes – Sydney grandfathers Mitch and Mark have won The Block 2021!

After a fierce battle between buyers advocate Frank Valentic and entrepreneur Danny Wallis, the couple’s house 2 went under the hammer in the second auction of the day for a staggering $4.044.444.44, bought by Danny.

With a reserve of $3.4 million, that gave them a profit of $644.444.44. Adding in their $100,000 prize money that took their total to $744.444.44.

It was a long way from the last place the pair managed when they joined The Block in 2019 at The Oslo and a change of fortune the pair were still trying to come to terms with when the day was over.

“Oh my God!” Mitch told The Block Shop as the news sank in.

“Never ever in our wildest dreams did we see this coming or even contemplate it… this was what not part of the plan!”

“The whole auction I was in shock,” Mark added “and then at the result… I was like: ‘I can't believe this just happened!

“It was only later I thought: “Oh my God… I think we just walked away with Three quarters of a million dollars!”

In second place was House 4 from Josh and Luke, which started with a $3.4 million reserve and sold for $3.930 million, for a profit of $530.000, bought by a Sydney couple.

Third place went to House 3, Tanya and Vito, with a $3.4 million reserve and sale price of $3.800.000.01 for a profit of $400.000.01, also bought by Danny Wallis.

In fourth place was Kirsty and Jesse’s house 5, with a reserve of $4.1 million and a sale price of

$4.401.523.67 for a profit of $301.523.67 (Danny Wallis again).

In fifth place was pre-auction favourites Ronnie and Georgia’s House 1, with a reserve of $3.4 million, a sale price of $3.696 million for a profit of $296,000, bought by a buyer’s advocate for an investor.

In total, The Block’s 2021 contestants won $2,271,968.12 in prizemoney, with all five Block houses selling for a profit.

In a day filled with drama, fan favourites Ronnie and Georgia’s last placing was a shock to all contestants after the west Australian couple and returning Block “faves” made the decision to put themselves first in the auction order.

Mitch and Mark admitted before the auctions they were convinced Ronnie and Georgia’s house, which had recorded the most views of their property and a large number of registered buyers, was sure to take out the competition, with either Kirsty and Jessie’s massive house 5 or Josh and Luke’s contemporary house 4 next.

“We honestly thought it would be Ronnie and Georgia who would win,” Mitch said.

“Then Kirsty and Jesse or the boys because it had become quite apparent that they had a lot of buyers.

“So, we thought well maybe we can get fourth, that would be cool… but then what if Vito and Tanya in house 3 were a bit of a dark horse? So clearly, we were not thinking we’d win!”

For Mark, there was just one hope, that everyone did well and that, fingers crossed, they didn’t repeat their wooden spoon performance at The Oslo in 2019.

“We came into this thinking: ‘Look as long as we don't come last, that would be fine!”

Winning, they both agree, was such an unexpected surprise and also vindication that they were right to stick to their guns despite numerous run-ins with The Block’s judges over design and style choices.

“We had very few wins (along the way), Mark said.

“It felt like we weren’t in sync with where the judges wanted us to go, but we pushed back on that and kept to our vision of a family home that we believed in that. We were always about making what we thought would be the best house for a family to live in.

“And while I respect the judges as interior designers and a journalist, we flip houses, they don’t, we have credibility, so be chose to believe in ourselves.”

Part of that victory, Mitch says, came from the realisation they would have to do as much work as they could themselves to free up money for trades and shop as much as possible from sponsors and suppliers.

“We figured if we could get up earlier that would give us extra time every day, that if we did as much labour as we could we could, we could replace winnings with the cost saving and really I can’t think of much that I bought outside of The Block Shop,” Mitch said.

“Really we have such great sponsors and their products cover such a great range I was able to furnish and decorate this house from ground up through the Block Shop and by doing that we really saved and we were able to spend that where it was needed.”

That’s a lesson the pair plan to take into their post Block life, using the win to help out their plans to continue finding and developing properties... and perhaps coming back for yet another year on The Block.

“We’re coming back next year for sure,” laughed Mitch, “whether they ask us or not, we’re coming back!”

But even if they don’t, Mark said they are both proud to have proved age is no barrier when it comes to winning.

“We are officially the oldest Block contestants ever,” he said.

“Even if you look back at all the other contestants from 17 seasons, we’re still older than any of them are right now and you know what? We’re pretty proud of that!
